I have some laptops I need to configured to log on to a domain LAN via 1x
(cellphone) modems and VPN. I can make it happen, but there are two
problems:
1. The process involves three separate logons and passwords: for Windows,
the 1X dial connection, and the VPN. This is cumbersome and error-prone,
but there doesn't seem to be any way to default the dial and VPN logon
credentials properly.
2. I need to limit bandwidth utilization over 1X, so I'm going to have to
make sure that these laptops never try to do folder synchronization,
default or roaming profiles, etc.
The kicker: this has to work new users who have never logged on to the
laptop or domain before, which means their profile doesn't yet exist on the
PC. I.e., I need to pre-define the dial and VPN IDs/passwords for new
users.
Dial-up networking allows me the option to save the default IDs and
passwords for "all users", but when I dial as a logged-out user, the dialog
changes the defaults.
I've been playing with Connection Manager (CMAK), but it may not be the
right tool. Among other things, it doesn't appear to support 1x dialing:
it doesn't allow full alphanumeric dial strings.
Has this ever been done? Can it be?
