Must i have SP2update to wireless connect?

I just bought a laptop that is upto date on criticalsoftware and has SP2
update installed.
However, My desktop does not have SP2 update installed...I have only a 28k
connectionto the internet..I plan to order the update on CD but it willtake
4- 6 weeks to bedelivered.

How do I go about having the Desktop and the Laptop reconize each other so I
may share files between the two? i purchased a Linksys Wireless Router and i
can see onthe laptop it is broadcasting....

I have "shared" the drives and My douments folder on the Desktop...just
cannot seem to connect.

Any helpis appreciated
