Multpile Default Gateways

OK, here's one I cannot figure out. I am running a Windows 2003 Server with
3 NICs. They are teamed using the lates version of HP Network Team. When I
go into the TCP/IP properties, configure them and save the cahnges, it gives
me the warning, Multiple default gateways are intended to provide reduncany
to a single network (such as an intranet or the Internet). They will not
function properly when the gateways are on two separate, disjoint networks
(such as one on your intranet and one on the internet). Do you want to save
this configuration?

The problem is, I only have one gateway configured. When I do a IPCONFIG,
still only one gateway. ROUTE PRINT, shows the same. Typically wouldn't be
a problem, but after a few days, my server (which is a Global Catalog
server) loses connectivity to another serer, at another site. Says, it
can't find it. I figure this is the problem. Any help?

Todd

Hello Todd,

I am sorry for the delayed response due to weekend. Please understand that
the newsgroups are staffed weekdays by Microsoft Support professionals to
answer your systems and applications questions. Our goal is to provide 24
hour response to all questions. Your understanding is greatly appreciated!

At this point, you indicated you have configured only one default gateway
which can be confirmed with IPCONFIG /ALL. Therefore, it seems it could not
be the problem. Based on my experience, the issue could occur under
multiple situations, to determine the cause more efficient, I would like to
collect more information for further research.

1. What is the detailed network topology?

2. Please collect the MPS network Report after the issue occurred.
---------------------------------

Download the MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE from the following link and then run this
tool to gather some information from the problematic computer:

http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE

To run this tool:

1. Double-click on the MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE file.

I understand this process may take some time, however it will not have a
negative effect on the performance.

2. A CAB file will be generated in the
%systemroot%\MPSReports\Network\Reports\Cab directory called
%COMPUTERNAME%_MPSReports.CAB. The CAB file will contain the reports
generated by the MPS Reporting Tool.

3. Send the CAB file as an attachment to v-(E-Mail Removed)

Thanks for your time. If there is anything that is unclear, please feel
free to let me know.

Thanks & Regards,

Jason Tan

I am also having this problem after recently applying Windows Update critical
fixes to a Window 2000 Professional machine.
I have two adapters (Token Ring is disabled and unplugged for a long time -
yr.) only the Ehternet is active. I have a static ip address and started
have problems connecting to internet webpages (outside of the intranet). I
checked the TCPIP configuration and I got the message:
"WARNING - multiple default gateways are intended to provide redundnacy to a
single network ( such as an intranet or Internet). Theywill not function
properly when the gateways are on two separate, disjoint networks (such as
one on your intranet and one on the internet). Do you want to save this
configuration?"
I am confused, I have only ever had 1 gateway configured. I have gotten a
lot of suggestions, like turn off your firewall, switch to DHCP (but I have
server-sw that need a static ip, not DHCP - after switching to DHCP and back
to static I am now worse off than I was before). I did the IPCONFIG -all as
well and there is only one gateway listed.
In another post (in XP) the command 'netsh winsock reset catalog' was
suggested but that does not work on 2000 Pro.
I have downloaded the suggested .EXE and will run the command, but I was
wondering if that is necessary - is there a resolution to this problem yet?

Thanks for your help - Joel

That is good.

Never use DHCP with a Server. DHCP should only be for Clients

As long as you don't use any Static Routes on this machine itself,...you can
correct the Routing Table by running "route -f" which will clear the
Table,...then reboot. The Table will rebuild on reboot and it will do it
based on the Nic's configuration,...so as long as the Nics are configured
properly then the table will be rebuilt properly.

The local Help Desk offered a suggestion. They said to look for a SOCKS.000
or SOCKS.NEW file in the ..\winnt\system32\ directory and delete it, then
reboot.
I did not have those files, but I did have SOCKS.CNF, I renamed it and
rebooted.
Now my machine is working as expected and I no longer get the odd message
exiting TCPIP configuration about multiple default gateways.

I am replying on my formerly ailing machine :-), just a further testament
that this fixed my problem. I couldn't even get to this website before.

Now I don't know what cause the SOCKS.CNF file to get written to my HDD. I
have rebooted a number of time and not file SOCK* has been written to my HDD
(yet)...
but it will be one of the things I will look for next time!

That is the first I have ever heard of that. My machine has no such file.
Perhaps it is the result of some software that is or was once loaded on your
machine that is unique to the place you are at,...hence it is something only
your Help Desk would have known about.

It may be the result of a Socks Client that maybe is, or was, on your
machine.
