Multiple IP address limit with one NIC

Hi,

In the advanced TCP/IP properties menu it is possible to assign multiple IP
addresses to a single machine. The windows box that I'm using only has a
single NIC so what is the maximum number of IP addresses my machine can have?
I know linux is capable of 254 IP addresses, is Windows comparable?

Thanks for your help,

Drew

Yes, it is possible. 254 sounds like a good limit, however the machine will
start degrading after 15 or more. There was a tech article discussing this,
but I can't find it. I found one about DCs, but it doesn't pertain to this
question.

iHowever, If this is a domain controller, don't do it, or expect numerous
issues with Active Directory.

Thanks for the reply Ace.

When you say the system will start degrading after 15 or so, are you talking
about unexpected errors or massive performance degradation? I need multiple
IP addresses in order to perform load testing with jmeter so that each
virtual user can come from a different IP address. If there is going to be an
unacceptable performance hit maybe I'll have to start looking at
alternatives...

Thanks again,

Drew

Come to re-think this, if a RRAS server can give out 254 IP addresses for
RAS clients (VPNs, etc), I don;t see why it can't handle it.

Here was that article. It was for Windows 2000 DCs. So disregard what I
said, and give it a shot.

Good to hear.

Once our sys admin reserves those addresses and I get around to performing
the full test I'll post back whether or not it was successful in case anyone
else is searching on this topic.

Thanks again Ace,

Drew
