which allows greater bandwidth?

i believe that multimode allows 10 Gbps and single mode allows 1Gbps can
anyone confirm this?

Not sure about the bandwidth, Distance is normally the reasn for using
single mode as it can be used over far greater distance. Also single
mode equipment usally costs more.

too be honest its hard to get a figure on the bandwisth in the cisco press
book i have there is no figure, and numerous websites and posts in other
groups come up with strangely different figures, some say its into Tbps
where as others say Gbps? it cant be that much of a grey area?

It'll be as confusing as copper, e.g. a well installed cat5e will
outperform a badly installed cat6 by miles. There's the rated speed
and the actual speed, which are all maximums which may or may not be
attainable depending on environment variables.
