Multihomed XP computer in a peer-2-peer network & related problems

For physical layout reasons, I was forced to setup a desktop as a Multihomed
PC running XP. Here is my setup:

3 Laptops and 1 Desktop(serves as a file server) running XP Pro, connected
wirelessly to a USRobotics router, which in turn is connected to a Cable
modem. There is a USRobotics range extender installed too.
All the machines have static IP addresses (192.168.2.X), router(192.168.2.1)
A network-multifunction is connected to the Ethernet port on the desktop,
and its IP is (192.168.3.100)

When the network was first setup this way, it would stop working after a few
hours. The laptops would show as being connected, but could not access the
Internet or shared docs on the desktop. An article on the Internet suggested
that the Multihomed computer should not have the Browser service running or
should not maintain the master Browser server list. I have turned the service
off on all the computers, and now the network keeps working for a few days,
before it stops responding. I don’t see any events in the event log
pertaining to the network problem.

Is this a well-known issue with multihomed Computers? Should the network be
running fine with the browser service turned off?

Please advise.

Thanks

Yes, this is a known problem with multihomed machines. The basic problem
is that there are two IP addresses associated with the machine's name. The
browser service should only bind to one of these addresses. Normally just
disabling Netbios over TCP/IP on one NIC solves the problem. The multihomed
machine can then function normally as far as browsing is concerned. It can
even be the browse master.

You should be able to run the computer browser service in the
192.168.2 subnet as long as you disable Netbios over TCP/IP on the Ethernet
device on the multihomed machine which is in the 192.168.3 subnet.

Browsing should then work in the 192.168.3 as well. It just won't
include the mutihomed machine in its browse list. Some other machine will do
the job of browse master.

You are really in a bind here. You need browsing in both segments for
your system to work properly, but the desktop needs to be the master browser
for both segments. This is not possible. A machine cannot be the master
browser for two different segments at the same time. If you disable NetBT on
the 192.168.3 interface, scanning fails. If you disable it on the 192.168.2
interface, file sharing fails for the other workstations.

You cannot get a combined browse list either. You need a domain
controller to build a combined browse list across segments.
