How much data do you need?

I've been looking around.

Uncapped, sometimes described as "unlimited", services are now rare.

Some services I see have a 2 gigabyte monthly cap, which would have been
pretty well used up by downloading some software I purchased in
December.

But does anyone have figures for what some of the commonplace services
use?

I find a text article (such as this) averages between 2 and 3 kilobytes.
That figure seems to have held for the last ten years, over a variety of
quite talkative newsgroups.

A 2GB cap comes out at about 65 MB per day, but don't forget protocol
overheads. Some blog webpages need several hundred kilobytes.

One figure I'm looking for is for BBC Broadband streaming media. How
much is used by a radio programme?

I've seen watchable MPEG-4 TV running at about 200MB per hour.

On the horizon, a carrier task force of the Salvation Navy was
turning into the wind, preparing to launch Zeppelins.

"BBC Radio Player" takes just under 22MB download per hour for "Listen
Live".

Joost, up to 320MB per hour down and about a third as much uploaded.

Surely it depends (a) which station you listen to and (b) the sampling rate
(I've had BBC R4 go down from 44 kbps to 6 kbps - it's OK for speech but it
definitely can sound "lacklustre" for drama, etc, where higher frequencies
really do add to the overall effect). Now measure the traffic if you have
the Snooker playing live for a few hours :-)
