How much bandwidth lost with Encryption?

I've just set up an open network and notice that the speeds are much faster
than I'm used to expecting from my 1MB connection. Is it common to lose
quite a bit of download speed by adding WEP or WPA encryption to the
connection?

I currently have a 1MB connection, and commonly only see arounf 750kbps
maximum with WPA enabled. I am getting 980kbps+ without the security.

Comments?

I was about to say that I couldn't tell any difference between my wireless
laptop (54g + WPA) and my wired desktop. But I've just run the PlusNet speed
test on both a few times, and there is maybe a *slight* difference. The
desktop is showing 960 and the laptop just over 950 - but nothing like 750!

I think it depends on the equipment concerned. Some will have better
hardware codecs which will vastly speed up the encryption/decryption
process whilst others will leave it to the drivers to provide encryption.
In the latter case you'd need a decent PC to come anywhere close to
hardware codecs.
I've never really thought about it before, I wired myself in even though
other computers in the house run wireless because of the increase
latency.

Err, rubbish.
SSH has nothing to do with bandwidth, it's all in the CPU.
My slowish duron 1300 will do 10mbit ethernet at 730K/s, at 7% CPU.
It's slighly faster with ftp, but only 2% or so - different packet sizes
for some reason.
(10mbit as I can't be bothered dragging the right cabling through)

My mistake, you are correct, though the effect is the same.
