MTU Setting on Virgin Net BB with DWL-G520

Hi guys. I've been having some problems setting up my wireless router.
Basically everything was fine online until I tried to send an e-mail
when it would connect to the SMTP server, auth me in, and then timeout.

After reading up on issues like this I tried lowering the MTU value
from 1400, which seems to have worked. At the minute it is set at 1340,
which seems a lot lower then anyone else's. Since I'm clearly going to
suffer a drop in download and upload speed, is their any other way
round this?
