Can anyone please offer advice on a problem with MRI-IDSL02 ADSL PCI modem
(GlobeSpanVirata device)?

On about 50% of occasions when I boot up I get a message "DSL modem is not
responding". Right clicking on the relevant icon in Windows Dial-Up
Networking gives the message "Dial-Up Networking cannot find the modem.
Install the modem or select a new modem before you dial".

In other words, the PC is not recognising the device.

On other occasions, when booting up, there is no such problem and the device
works perfectly with faultless connection. When the problem does appear,
rebooting / restarting the PC clears the problem, although one may have to
try a couple of times.

I have reinstalled the driver a number of times. Mri have sent a new driver,
but the new files fail to support the driver installation process-I have
told Mri about this. (Incidentally, I don't think much of the documentation.
It comes as a DOC file on CD-ROM, and all the graphics get mangled in
WordPad. And the documentation has no UK-specific advice.)

In view of the inconsistent performance of this modem on my setup (3 year
old Duron based PC, with plenty of RAM), I feel inclined to try another
modem. But I would be grateful if anyone could offer help.

I bought a MRI-PDSL01 during the summer. Easy to install and initially I
had no problems. Don't know what I did - might have had something to do
with renaming the desktop shortcut - but I started getting messages that the
device could not be found, reinstall modem etc.

Very frustrating, tried reinstalling MANY MANY times to no avail and
eventually I ended up reformatting the hard drive and a clean reinstall of
Windows. Modem then reinstalled okay and no problems since - and I've left
the desktop shortcut alone.

I use a 900Mhz Duron processor, 512Mb RAM. Apart from that one glitch, I've
had no other problems and I get good upload and dowload speeds.

Belated thanks for the above response to my posting on 5 November 2003.

I tried various remedies. Mri supplied a patch for known difficulties using
MRI-IDSL02 PCI modem with my motherboard (Duron/Athlon - Socket A MATX
[M7VKA]). But this patch made no difference. Mri finally suggested that I
should try the modem in another PC to see if there might be a modem fault.
By that stage I concluded that it was going to be easier for me to purchase
a different modem and try my luck with it.

I therefore installed a quite different PCI modem, this one with a Conexant
chipset. Apart from two incidents in the first week it has been operating
without a problem.

From all of this I conclude that installing a PCI modem is a bit of a
lottery, and that what suits one PC may not suit another. However, I still
believe that a PCI modem is a better option than a USB modem. I now have a
spare modem, but it may be of service when my somewhat elderly PC is
replaced.
