Belated thanks for the above response to my posting on 5 November 2003.
I tried various remedies. Mri supplied a patch for known difficulties using
MRI-IDSL02 PCI modem with my motherboard (Duron/Athlon - Socket A MATX
[M7VKA]). But this patch made no difference. Mri finally suggested that I
should try the modem in another PC to see if there might be a modem fault.
By that stage I concluded that it was going to be easier for me to purchase
a different modem and try my luck with it.
I therefore installed a quite different PCI modem, this one with a Conexant
chipset. Apart from two incidents in the first week it has been operating
without a problem.
From all of this I conclude that installing a PCI modem is a bit of a
lottery, and that what suits one PC may not suit another. However, I still
believe that a PCI modem is a better option than a USB modem. I now have a
spare modem, but it may be of service when my somewhat elderly PC is
replaced.
