Hello,
I have a windows 2000 server that we are replacing with a windows 2003
server. The new server will have a different name than the old one. There
are several shared folders on the 2000 server that I need to move to the 2003
server. I realize that I will have to re-create the links on each of the
users computers to recognize the new links (ie \\oldserver\share1 will become
\\newserver\share1 ) What I am wondering is if there is a better way to
create shared folders on the network so that in the future when we replace
the server again we don't have to recreate all the shares on the users
computers. We are using active directory and Exchange 2003. Our servers are
a mix of 2000 and 2003 but we are upgrading all to 2003 over the next 6
months. All the client computers are 2000 pro or xp pro.

Hi Lyle,

Check out DFS (Distributed File System)

Distributed File System
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000...int/dfsnew.asp

Note: if you have many shares on your old server, you can export them from
registry and import this information on new server (this way you don't have
to recreate all the shares).
Also easies way to move data (at least in my opinion) is to simply back it
up (e.g. to bkf file) and do a restore on new system...

I hope this helps,
