Hi,

The proper way to upgrade your domain from NT to Windows 2000 or Windows
2003 is to upgrade your PDC computer. Now this doesn't have to be your
current PDC. You can setup new Windows NT BDC, synchronize it with Windows
PDC then promote it. Now when this is done, you insert Windows 2000 (or
Windows 2003) CD into this server and perform the upgrade.

Before the upgrade, make sure that your server that you is currently running
NT and will be upgraded to Windows 2000 can support this operating system
(e.g. can you get all necessary drivers). Once you have this operation
completed, you can use your new server as second DC (run DCPromo on it and
select additional domain controller for new domain). After the upgrade you
can also move everything from upgraded server to your new server and remove
the old hardware.

As your backup plan I highly recommend:
* before the upgrade, take one of BDC offline and store it for few days
(don't bring them on the network). In case anything fails, you can always
disconnect your Windows 2000 DC (new domain) and connect BDC back and
promote it to PDC...
* having at least two domain controllers in every domain that you crate. It
is quite hard to restore domain that had single domain controller and failed

Here is some additional information that you should read before the upgrade

Upgrading Windows NT 4.0 Domains to Windows Server 2003 Active Directory

I hope this helps,

Mike

Thanks for the answer,
but i do not want to upgrade my NT4 machine. i just want to
move my previous DC NT4 to an new domain which already
have a windows server2003 as a DC.

I want this NT4 to be a member server..and the new role only required
for this server is File Server.

What is the proper way to do this?
Thanks!

Hi,

Then take a look at ADMT. It can move user accounts with SID and passwords
from one domain to the other.

Active Directory Migration Tool v.2.0

The only problem that I can see right now is for NT 4.0 PDC. The only way to
migrate it from PDC to member server is to reinstall it...
