Moving house + new phone number

Hi all

The answer here may be obvious, but I can't seen it.

I'm about to move house. I'm currently with Demon for adsl (since the
mid 90s), with a BT line, but it seems to be costing a lot (24.99/mth +
20/mth BT), so I thought I'd change to a package with adsl + landline.

So, just as an example, I looked at the Tiscali site, and they have a
page where you put in your phone number, 'the one you wish to use adsl
on.'

The trouble is, I don't have a number yet for the new flat. Do BT 'own'
their numbers? Ie, could I take my current BT landline number with me
to the new flat and bypass BT altogether?

Or do BT make a problem with this?

And are these packages really any good?

Thanks for all thoughts.

Thanks, and it looks like not, sadly, as I just used the BT bb site to
check. Only moving two miles away, but even so.

So, say, Plusnet or Orange can give me a whole new phone line at the new
flat?

Don't know about them, but Andrews & Arnold certainly can, see:
http://aaisp.net/aa/aaisp/pstn.html
Currenly the line is only usable for ADSL and emergency calls, because
ordinary voice calls are barred; so VOIP would be the way to go for your
voice calls.

This is a premium quality service and priced accordingly ...!

There are some - for example http://www.thephone.coop/

They charge the full rate for connection, and I have no idea of the quality
of their broadband service. But providers do exist if you hunt and ignore
the big players.

If you do move to an inexpensive package you would be well advised to do
some research first. If you need a reliable and quick connection with
support that have some idea what they are talking about you may be
disappointed.
