| My current setup is using an Asanté wired broadband router which has a
print
| server, Asanté FriendlyNET FR3004LC. I have BT 512k Broadband. I have a
| Windows 98 desktop, XP home laptop and Linux server (done nothing with
this
| yet) connected to this. It works great.
|
| I am moving into a new house which is only wired for telephone in one room
| downstairs. Rather than running new extensions and drilling for LAN I am
| considering a wireless solution.
|
| To my knowledge the following is possible :
|
| - Connect existing Asanté router to the telephone jack downstairs. This
can
| be conveniently kept out of the way in the nearby meter cupboard.
| - Connect a wireless access point to the Asanté router via RJ45 cable.
| - Purchase wireless network cards for win 98 and Linux and a wireless PC
| card for the XP laptop.
| - Connect the printer to the Linux server rather than the router
| - Cordless telephones x 2 with intercom.
|
| Do you think this setup will work? I would really appreciate any pointers.
|
| Any recommendations for quality affordable device purchase for an access
| point, wireless network cards, wireless pc card and cordless telephones?
|
| Thanks a lot,
|
| Tom.

No reason why not. However, bear in mind distances/line of sight when
positioning the wireless clients. If you're going into a big old house with
thick walls you might have problems connecting. Personally I'd buy the AP
and a card for the laptop. Then I'd do a site survey to ensure your laptop
can "see" the AP from all the locations you want it to. If it can, then buy
the cards for the other machines.
Ensure that whatever card you buy for your server has Linux friendly
drivers.
