Moved to new house, previous owner not cancelled their ADSL

I've moved into a new house and now wish to order a broadband account with
Zen.

My problem is this, the previous owner of the house has not cancelled their
ADSL service....

Even though we've taken an old number from our house (NOT the one I had BB
on before), the indicator light on the front of my Alcatel frog shows me
that I've got an ADSL signal.

How long will this likely delay matters?

Si.

Around 3-4 weeks as you will need the last owner to contact his ISP. The
connection will need to be removed, then yours set up or transferred. If
you're on a different number I can't see why you have any ADSL light on. A
call to BT might help too.

You seem to manage quite nicely.

Really? Most of what you write seems to have been recycled from
alt.flames.
I fear that Macbeth was talking about you in act 5 scene5, just after
the queen dies.

You're making this up.

does it show up on the www.bt.com/broadband checker as an active
service on the line (last paragraph) ?

if not, having a live signal may actually speed it up.

This may sound silly, but cant you have 2 ADSL connections on the same line?
When i switched from BT to UKOnline they botched the transfer and i was left
with 2 ADSLs for a bit and I could alternate between hosts simply by
changing username & pword for the router.
