Move partition...

Hi Guys,

I have two hard disks, one that has our "Data" partition and the other
has no partitions at all. In Disk Managmenet, I converted each disk to
dynamic disks. My data partition has run out of space, and so I want to
move it to the second disk to occupy all of it's space. I thought there
would be a "move" command in Disk Management, but unfortunately there
isn't. So, I've created a volume on the second disk intending to just
copy everything from the data partition to that drive, and then change
the drive letters afterwards. However, I cannot copy the data as some
of it is in use by the operating system.

Whats the best way to do this with the most minimal down-time, and
preferably, without using Partition Magic (my company won't give me any
more money! lol)

Thanks,
Mike

Actually, I was thinking.... I could schedule a task to reboot the
computer. But in the floopy disk, I could have a boot disk to run a
copy command.

Now, all I need is a boot disk with dynamic disk support? Any ideas
guys? Thanks!

First, I take it the "Data" drive is not the C drive or containing the OS?
If not then you need to figure out what service or program is accessing the
data you wish to move as the OS itself would not be accessing your data in a
random folder. Is the data from a particular program or data base? If that
is the case you just need to stop that programs services and then copy the
data over and once done change the drive letters. Again though this would be
if your OS is on a C drive, your data is on the D: drive E: is CD and then F:
is the new disk. Copy to F: once services are stopped. When copy complete
change drive letter D: to G: and then make F: D:.

Transam388, you are correct - I'm not talking about the C:\ drive
containing the OS. However, the Program Files directory is located on
the "data" partition and there are so many services, I don't know which
service corresponds to which program. I don't even know what really is
all on the data drive. Want I'm really hoping for is a boot disk that
has support for dynamic disks, so that I can just edit the autoexec.bat
file on the boot disk to execute a copy command.

Thanks for the reply!
Mike
