I've been reading back post and found problem like mine and ask a
question about my XP computer seeing my 98 computer but the 98 can't see
the network. I still can't make it work. Looking in connections on the
XP, I see 2. One is
Local Area Connection
Connected
SiS 900 Baised Pci Fast Eathernet
The other is
1394 Connection
Disabled, Firewalled
1394 Net Adapter

I don't know how 2 connections got on. Guess I did it trying so many
times to get it working. Could this be keeping things from working?
Maybe I could disable the Local Area Connection and enable the 1394
connection, or enable both or fade back 5 yards and punt.

L.D.

On my laptop, the 1394 Network adapter is the Firewire port. I'm thinking
that it's probably the same for your computer. That adapter shouldnt be
causing any network problems. I'm thinking that it's a different problem.

Are both of your computers able to ping the network router? Make sure that
your computers are getting IP addresses assigned to them. If both are, and
they are allowing the File sharing port, try this:

Go to your XP computer and look up it's IP address on the network.
Go to your 98 computer and click "Start" then "Run". Type in the "open"
field:

\\xpcomputernamehere

See if that works. If it doesnt, try this instead:

\\ipaddressofxpcomputerhere

See if that works. Please note that the computers MUST be in the same
workgroup for this to work. If they are not, then you'll have to change the
workgroups to match.

I'm online alot on IM. If you want to contact me there, feel free. I've
had alot of this XP and 98 juggling thing, and I know its a pain to network
them.

I sent you an email replying to the email you sent me. If I get a "failed
mail" thingy, I'll paste it in a reply here.

The "1394 Connection" is a firewire connection, and since Windows 98 does
not support Firewire networking this is entirely a non-player in your
problem. Leave it alone. The most likely cause of your one-way network
problem is a firewall configuration error, so disable any Microsoft
firewalls and uninstall any non-Microsoft firewalls until the network works
as you expect, then reinstall the firewall software and configure it
properly.
