Jeeze - this stuff is complicated - and I've been in i.t. for years.

I now have the BT line up and running on ADSL. Demon have sent me a
Speedtouch 330 modem which works OK. It is a USB modem which is a pain
'cos I only have two USB ports on the laptop and I need those for
peripherals. However I can now connect to the Internet - albeit a bit
slow.

The laptop also has an Internet port (I think) which I'd prefer to
use.

Now I want to set up a wireless router and have a Linksys Wireless-G.
Unfortunately this only has an Internet port for the modem to connect
into. But the modem only has a USB type cable.

Please can anyone advise how I can connect a USB type modem to an
Internet connection on the router.

Many thanks - CJB.

With great difficulty, perhaps if you used the proper labels we could
be of greater help, such as what the hell is an internet port, if you
mean LAN port, you've bought the wrong kit you do really need a DSL
router, not what, I think, you have an LAN router, but the ports for
ADSL & LAN look very similar so it may be possible to use that router,
just bin the USB.

You do not need a modem. Your router is a "modem" too.

Much as you may hate the suggestion, using an ADSL modem/router/wireless
access point (such as Netgear DG834 / Linksys WAG54G or similar) may be the
best way.

It sounds like the Linksys you have might be for providing wireless access
to a single ethernet connection (such as would be available from cable
services on a set-top box). All too many "broadband routers" are just
that - a router for linking a home LAN to the WAN (cable network) but
don't have any ADSL modem in them... If you use groups.google.com
to check back a couple of years, you will see the "fun and games" (I use
the phrase with tongue in cheek, seemed like they were hitting their heads
against brick walls) of trying to connect a wired/wireless router to some
"simple ADSL modem" - just a major pain, unfortunately. You've added
USB into the ghastly picture, and that is just a further complication you
really could do without, IMHO. Lots of luck if you persevere with that!

Oh, and connected via USB, I truly hope you have a good firewall on your PC
as a 'direct connection' like that (or using a PCI card in a desktop) will
be reliant on whatever s/w you are using to prevent hackers.

Can use any FTP client, or use (provided, Windows XP) utility
to back-up specific PC directories to remote storage by using
a schedule, or to always 'keep in sync' with your PC storage!

OK - many thanks for the tips. I use the label 'Internet' because on
the Linksys router that is what the input socket is labelled as in the
moulded plastic case - this is the socket for the cable from the modem
to the router; but the problem is that the cable from the modem expects
a USB socket on the router.

At`present the cable links are:

BT phone socket (via filter) to Modem to USB port on Computer.

What need is:

BT phone socket (via filter) to Modem to ADSL socket on Router to ADSL
socket on Computer. That is as per the diagram in the set up
instructions for the Router.

However if the router also doubles as modem then maybe I need:

BT phone socket (via filter) to ADSL socket on the Router to ADSL
socket on the Computer. But I don't have a cable for the link from the
filter to the router. I only have a cable for the link from the router
to the Computer.

CJB.

ROFLMAO...is that "I've been in IT for years" means you've been using
MS Office for a while? Must be if you haven't a clue what a RJ45 LAN
socket is.

There's no such thing as an internet connection.

How many weeks have you been answering the phone in reception at the IT
company you work at again?

I'm in i.t. support - that is as per Business Analysis / Business
Objects. I have no experience of configuring hardware or cnetwork
cabling. I haven't a clue what a RJ45 is - but you seem to denigrate my
ignorance. But thanks for bothering to post a comment even if it wasn't
helpful. CJB.
