Monitoring Broadband Usage

Hi,

Been trying a few applications to monitor my usage from BT.
I think that the monitoring programmes that I have tried are showing total
movements on my network on not just my internet downloads

I have a wireless router/modem set-up with 3 PC sharing the internet
connection.

Does anyone have any suggestions for monitoring just the internet and not
the data flow between PCs.
If needs be I could monitor the PC's separately if I was sure I was only
monitoring the broadband usage.

Thanks and sorry if this has been asked before

Andy

ideally your router would provide stats and you look at those - either via a
web page or using a monitoring tool such as SNMP.

however cannot do it on my Netgear, although some brands claim to support
SNMP.

if you can filter the bandwidth usage with whatever utility you use and tell
it to ignore "stuff" on your LAN, then you will get a reasonably accurate
number for each PC.

For example, my home LAN uses 192.168.0 255.255.255.0, so anything else is
probably going out to the Internet.

Or maybe configure to only monitor packet between your PC and the router MAC
address?

it has - but i havent seen any really satisfactory answers (apart from move
to an unlimited account so you can ignore it).

Depends on the ISP - some have a monitor facilty (unless one is after a way
to challenge the ISP's figures, perhaps)... McAfee (installed on a new PC)
reported about 55 GB of traffic for last month. Doesn't quite match my ISP
"billing month" but I've no complaints at paying only 14.99/month :->

Change to DSL Max the way I did: switch ISP <http://www.dslmax.info/>

Try PRTG Traffic Grapher from <www.paessler.com/prtg>. It monitors
traffic through the router's Internet port, assuming that the router
supports SNMP.
