Hi everybody,
I am unable to find why modprobe is unable to locate the module ppp0. I am struggling for last three days. I have "google it", but no solution. I have added the alias in /etc/modules.conf, but problem still occur. I am running Redhat 8.0 on IBM Thinkpad. Please help me. I am stuck!........ Thanks in advance. Note that LCP negotiations were started, else they could not be terminated. If the kernel one in the 2.4.x series then something outdated is asking modprobe to find ppp0. That - ppp0 - is an alias for ppp, the name modprobe uses to find the module ppp.o, that's built into modprobe. The ppp.o module contained the kernel code for pre-2.4.x kernels, but things changed and the PPP code for 2.4.x kernels is now in other modules with different names. If the kernel is pre-2.4.x then the ppp.o module hasn't been compiled. That could be due to an oversight or the PPP code being compiled into the kernel rather than as a module. I rather doubt that pppd would start at all if the kernel didn't have the PPP code one way or another. > Feb 23 14:47:59 duprn002-10370 /etc/hotplug/net.agent: NET unregister event > not supported > Feb 23 14:47:59 duprn002-10370 modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module ppp0 > Feb 23 14:48:30 duprn002-10370 last message repeated 939 times > Feb 23 14:49:25 duprn002-10370 last message repeated 1716 times Weird. Try putting the line alias ppp off in /etc/modules.conf and see if that eliminates the modprobe complaints above. If it does then add the pppd debug option somewhere and use the recipe in my signature to get a detailed log file. Hi Kite,
Thanks for your hints. I changed the /ect/module.conf with "alias ppp0 off", now there is no error about "modprobe: Can't locate module ppp0". But there are still error about the LCP. Here is output of /var/log/ppp.log Feb 24 14:47:52 duprn002-10370 pppd[1908]: pppd 2.4.1 started by root, uid 0 Feb 24 14:47:52 duprn002-10370 pppd[1908]: Using interface ppp0 Feb 24 14:47:52 duprn002-10370 pppd[1908]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyNC0 Feb 24 14:47:52 duprn002-10370 /etc/hotplug/net.agent: assuming ppp0 is already up Feb 24 14:47:56 duprn002-10370 pppd[1908]: LCP terminated by peer Feb 24 14:47:59 duprn002-10370 pppd[1908]: Connection terminated. Feb 24 14:47:59 duprn002-10370 pppd[1908]: Exit. why this is happening? I am using kernel 2.4.18-14, and my nokia module is complied with this kernel. I think this nokia script is working fine, because when I execute some commands relating to this script, this work fine, for example this command "nokia_ctl enable_gsm" and so on. How I know that "ppp0 is already up". Where this ppp0 is located. How I know that I have ppp0 or PPP installed or not, where this module should be located?????????? For any help.... Thank you all in advance. I am using kernel 2.4.18-14, and my nokia > module is complied with this kernel. Did you do add the pppd debug option? With the debug option there has to be a LCP TermReq from the peer in ppp.log at the very least. Here's one way to add the debug option: echo debug >> /etc/ppp/options And here's a step-by-step recipe in case I didn't ask the right question: 1) Generate a detailed pppd/chat log file: echo 'daemon.*;local2.* /var/log/ppp.log' >> /etc/syslog.conf killall -HUP syslogd echo debug >> /etc/ppp/options Run whatever (script, kppp, wvdial, ect.) to start pppd and/or chat. 2) Post an exact copy of the messages in ppp.log (not hand-copied): Procedure depends on the newsreader, or personal preference. 3) Clean up when done: rm /var/log/ppp.log sed '$d' /etc/syslog.conf > foo; mv foo /etc/syslog.conf killall -HUP syslogd sed '$d' /etc/ppp/options > foo; mv foo /etc/ppp/options *Note:* All the changes to /etc/syslog.conf and /etc/ppp/options could also be done by simply using an editor rather than the echo, sed, and mv utilities. Making file changes by first creating foo as shown above assumes that root's umask is 022. > I think this nokia script is working fine, because when I execute > some commands relating to this script, this work fine, for example > this command "nokia_ctl enable_gsm" and so on. > How I know that "ppp0 is already up". Where this ppp0 is > located. How I know that I have ppp0 or PPP installed or not, > where this module should be located?????????? I rather doubt that ppp0 was created. It's created by the kernel for each PPP link after IPCP negotiation completes and goes away when the link is terminated - when things go right. It not "installed" in the sense that it exists on a drive. "ifconfig" should show the PPP interface after PPP comes up for sending and receiving IP data. The PPP kernel modules you'll need are ppp_generic.o ppp_async.o To check for them: locate ppp_|egrep 'generic.o|async.o' Assuming you have locate and it's database, they should show up in /lib/modules/2.4.18-14/drivers/net - I think! I compile PPP directly into my kernels so I can't be completely sure where the modules are installed. Yes, PPP can also be compiled directly into the kernel but that's not likely for a kernel that comes with a distribution. The modules will also show up in the output of "lsmod" if they are currently inserted in the kernel. -- Clifford Kite Email: "echo xvgr_yvahk-(E-Mail Removed)|rot13" PPP-Q&A links, downloads: http://ckite.no-ip.net/ /* The generation of random numbers is too important to be left to chance. */ |
