Modem/router resynch

Hi,

1)
Turning the router off (say overnight) and on again later will (IIUC)
cause a re-synch. What, if anything, might cause a re-synch if the
router is left on all the time?

2)
If you have a good synch rate and stable connection, should you avoid
turning off the router overnight?

3)
For some months, at least since June, I had a rock-steady connection
and with typical stats as below:-
Operational data report : near end (Downstream)
-----------------------------------------------
Attainable line rate : 9872 kbit/sec
Attainable Atm rate : 8768 kbit/sec
Used line rate : 8600 kbit/sec
Fast used Atm rate : 0 kbit/sec
Interleaved used Atm rate : 7616 kbits/sec
Rel. capacity occupation : 87
Noise Margin : 10 dB
Line attenuation : 22 dB
Output Power : 19 dBm

For all that time I never turned off my router. The router and one
phone are (and always have been) connected to the master wall socket.
There have been no changes to my computer, router, or phone.

Then on Wednesday morning my internet connection was lost despite the
fact that my router showed it was still synched and had an ADSL
connection. The loss of internet connection lasted over an hour so I
decided to turn off the router, wait 20 mins, then turn it back on.
This brought back my internet connection.

A few minutes later, however, I lost internet connection again although
again my router remained apparently synched to ADSL. When the internet
connection didn't return after about 30 mins I repeated the router
on/off procedure and the internet connection returned. This whole
cycle of lost internet connection, apparently maintained ADSL synch,
router on-off was repeated another three times before my internet
connection remained stable.

I haven't switched off the router since then but now my line stats are:-

Operational data report : near end (Downstream)
-----------------------------------------------
Attainable line rate : 8216 kbit/sec
Attainable Atm rate : 7232 kbit/sec
Used line rate : 7540 kbit/sec
Fast used Atm rate : 0 kbit/sec
Interleaved used Atm rate : 6624 kbits/sec
Rel. capacity occupation : 92
Noise Margin : 13 dB
Line attenuation : 22 dB
Output Power : 19 dBm

Any idea why I had 5 lost internet connections on Wednesday morning
despite the ADSL apparently synching okay?

Before Wednesday and since June I was getting download speeds of around
6 Mbps but since Wednesday it has been just a little over 5 Mbps.
What might have caused the decreased synch rate and how might I get
back to my higher speeds?

Thanks for any advice or information.

Kit

Reduce global warming? Save on electricity bills? Reduce risk of
electrical fires?
:-)

As I said later in my post (it was a long post - did you read that
far?) I never turned it off until I had to do so.. My question was
related to the the rest of my post. Maybe I should rephrase it.
Can turning off your router ruin a good synch rate?

Debatable.

Save on electricity bills?

Only measurable over a very long period, months or even years.

: : Reduce risk of electrical fires?

Unlikely, you're far more likely to get electrical fires due to dubious
house wiring or piles of multi-way extension strips ;-)

I've never known it happen here, but that doesn't mean it couldn't, of
course.

I noticed from your headers that you are a entanet customer, might be
worth you having a look at ADSL guide forum, as there have been some
issues over the last week and again last night, all through the night,
which have been ongoing for the last week or so. You may be another
person suffering from the same problems a number of entanet users are,
as well as myself, being on entanet also.

Thanks very much for those links.
The problems they discuss certainly seem to have happened at around the
same time my problems started. However, if I understand correctly the
problems discussed there are mainly with connecting to sites in the US
and my connections were completely lost to everywhere - I couldn't even
get to the enta web servers.

Hi

Others experienced problems getting to UK sites, myself included, eg.
ebay.co.uk just being one of those sites. There was a earlier problem
with routing and telia.net and some UK sites that have their routing
go through US sites, like ebay uk.

Anyway, entanet have now 'identified' the problems caused, all is
explained here: http://noc.enta.net where there is a link to a total
explanation of the recent ongoing problems.

If you feel your problem is not related to this, send your initial
post in this thread to enta support for them to look at your problem.

Good luck.

I doubt it was a telia.net as that would have effected the whole of
the UK, as they provide a large amount of bandwidth. Losing the
connection can happen for many reasons, i am with sky and for the
start of my contract i used to get the same symptoms as you. Now mine
were becuase of the line quailty. But i would say that these are
normal, you probally did re-sync overnight or at some point its
unlikley that you connection has been on for a whole week without re-
syncing. The likley casue is that more customers have joined you ISP
and are connected to your exhange and the increased traffic has cause
the dropouts. In terms of the reduced speed that all part of the rate
adpative service. The DSLAM noticed that you were restarting a lot and
thought that there was a problem on the line so reduced the speed so
you could get a more stable line and that my have reduced your
profile. You could ask your ISP to reset the card at the exchange and
that would reset your profile.

Fairly constant rebooting over a short length of time could
temporarily reduce your sync/ download speeds. Leave it a few days &
it should go back to your normal speed

Thanks for the response.
I think it got hit by a double-whammy...
As mentioned in my original post I had to turn of the router four times
in one morning because my internet connection kept disappearing. It's
been solid since then (touch wood!). Then the following night we had 3
(possibly 4) brief power-outages each lasting just a few sec. The
outages caused the router to re-boot (and screwed up my Sky+
recordings!).

Hopefully, as you say, the synch speed will get back up.
Just wondering... if there isn't a loss of synch (eg from router
switching off or loss of connection to the exchange) what mechanism(s)
allow it to synch at a new speed (higher or lower)?

Kit
