Modem/Router advice

Hi there, I'm after some advice about replacing my modem/router.

In my current setup I have a Nokia M1122 modem/router connected to my
8Mb/s ADSL line, and also connected to a netgear 10/100 switch which
feeds a couple of decent spec computers running XP SP2.

I use the internet a fair bit, and have also got into downloading
various US tv shows via UTorrent, so my main concern is that it needs
to be able to work well with P2P connections.

Does anyobdy have any advice as to what I should or shouldn't go for?
I'm looking to spend around £60 (or less) if possible. Anyone who can
tell me what NOT to get would be really useful!

Thanks in advance.

For reliable P2P performance you should avoid all the consumer brands and
get Draytek which is office class equipment. You can pick up one of the
Vigor 2600 range on Ebay for £60, they are dead reliable, so no worries.
That's I how I got mine, never missed a bit in 3 years.
Regards,
Martin

I would support this suggestion as this is what I did also. I have
found DRAYTEK very reliable, especially compared to two NETGEAR
routers that were a constant pain.

Thanks for that.

You're not the only person to mention Netgear problems to me, I've
heard various stories about them choking when trying to run P2P and
internet activities at the same time.

I notice that they have a '2800' version out now, any idea if it's
worth going for that over the 2600? (or is it just a firmware upgrade
of the 2600? ...)

Whereas my DG834G is 100% reliable for weeks (even months!!) on end and is
not fazed by P2P in the slightest!

I have no doubt it does what it says on the tin but unless you have direct
experience of both routers it is difficult for you to be objective in this
matter. For all round performance nothing beats a Draytek router, what's more
their support services are first class.

What sort of download speeds to you get on P2P apps, out of interest? -
the DG834G was the original replacement I considered (before I started
seeing some of the horror stories people have reported).

What about 'Billion'? They seem to be sitting somewhere in between the
more basic models and the Draytek machines.

This is highly dependent on the node locations and speeds of Bittorrent
"seeds" but often up to >150k bytes/sec (this is with a 2M ADSL line which
will max out at ~230k anyway)

Quicksilver,
The Draytek 2800 is ADSL2+, where the 2600 is just plain ADSL.
Since you are unlikely to get >8Mb/s connection it shouldn't matter too
much.
However I noted that Zyxel 2602HW ADSL2+ router was able to maintain 3Mb/s
on 5km long line,
where the Vigor 2600 can only manage 2Mb/s.
Haven't managed to get my mitts on 2800 yet, nor will you with budget of £60
:-(
Regards,
Martin
