It sounds like a classic USB modem problem - many chipsets built onto the
motherboard have problems with USB modems, and the symptoms you describe
match them pretty well.
I`m guessing you have either a VIA or SiS chipset on the motherboard.
How many devices have you got in that particular USB port - if you have
more than one, it might be worth removing everything else connected
via USB and see if the problem persists. If that cures the problem,
there`s the answer - your motherboard either has a chipset with a known
problem, or may not be able to provide enough power to the USB port to
run the stuff you want. Rebooting will usually cure this, but its not
ideal - it drove me bloody mad as I was having to do it several times a
day, and that`s excluding "normal" windows crashes !
Another solution that some people have reported success with is a
seperately powered USB hub, although you are probably looking tat about
£20+ for one of these. For the additional expense, a modem / router is
well worth going for, which connects to your machine using a standard
network cable.
Prices are in the region of £35-£40 for a cheap one from ebuyer, but the
more well known names seem to start in the region of £80 upwards.
I`ve never once regretted buying mine (a cheap one) - it saved me a LOT
of problems and is a lot more secure against hackers. They are usually a
piece of cake to set up, and are not normally OS dependant.
The only proviso with routers is with some applications produced by M$
(ie. Netmeeting) use weird and wonderful non-standard protocols for
certain functions in the program which may not be supported on a cheap
router. I`ve certainly never had any problems with any software since I
bought mine in about April, but I don`t use Netmeeting.
AR41 (the one i`ve got) and ASR-8400 are a couple of model numbers to
look for on ebuyer, although the AR41 went out of stock a while ago, they
do seem to get more stock in sporadically.
Either of these would give you a 4 port router / modem combo, which means
you could plug in 4 machines at a time and all could use the internet
independantly without you needing to sort out any ICS crap.
