Modem problems and replacement

I am having intermittent connection problems on ADSL 512 connection I have a
D_Link 300 modem.
Sometimes I cannot connect to the config page - then without doing anything
I will suddenly connect.Is there anyway I can test the modem

Thinking modem problems and looking up prices of replacements there is such
a wide range of prices that I am totally confused what are the
advantages/extra features as the price range goes up
