I bought an Actiontec kit recently ( 3010UW cable router & wifi USB card)
and am very pleased with the way it works, however having seen a selection
of external aerials that would allow me to hook up a somewhat impoverished
friend a good few hundred metres away I have been wondering if I could fit
this to the actiontec router. the idea being to have an external 5db gain
omni at the house and an 18db beam at the remote location. I accept that
speed will fall back to about 1MB but this is not an issue.

The unit has fixed aerials that are connected inside. Having taken a peek, I
can see each part of the dipole is fed by a length of coax to the
transceiver.

Has anyone any experience of modding this unit for use with external aerials

Regards:

Mark

Thanks for the link - and the aerial design looks extremely interesting. I
couldn't however find the area / link which deals in modding the unit for
external aerials. Apologies if I missed something obvious but I even tried
doing a search on the page for actiontec and found nothing. I did find a
link for modding a card but that is replacing one aerial with an external.
the router has a sort of split dipole, both being fed by coax so I'm a bit
unsure as to what needs connecting where other than to take the center of
both coax cables, one to the centre of the connector and one to the shield.
Not sure which end is "hot" tho.

Can you please enlighten me as to the link I should be looking at.

Knd Regards:

Mark
