Hi, I'm looking for a way to reliably and repeatedly set up temporar
wireless broadband Internet access in remote/outdoor locations acros
the US, and also western Europe if I can use the same solution there.
I've been asked if I can arrange Internet access for two weeks for 1
simultaneous users within a 300-meter radius with light networkin
requirements, mainly checking and replying to email, uploading smal
(<150K) files, and web surfing. They'll call me when they're ready
I'll come in and set up what I'm assuming would have to be
satellite-based Internet connection, configure the network and hel
users setup their laptops. Hopefully I wouldn't have to stay for th
duration to troubleshoot: remote administration would be preferable.
come back and take it down when they're finished with it. If thi
works out I would have to do it again maybe 3-6 more times next year

I've been looking around at satellite Internet providers and I'm seein
mostly "professional installation services". This needs to b
something I can set up, configure, test and troubleshoot myself. Thi
is probably going to happen in November. Any suggestions would b
greatly appreciated

Maybe one of the satellite providers would be willing to work with you when
you explain your unique circumstances...is it really necessary for you to be
on site? Why not just send them in to do it for you? Maybe they could do
the installation on a trailer for you or something, and you or one of the
more technically inclined users out their just would need to know how to get
the antenna aimed at the satellite once the site was established.

Another option might be radio internet. A friend of mine has set up a low
bandwidth system for bringing email to parts of Africa using radio
equipment. Basically setup as a non profit so aid workers can use email.
Send me an email to: allclearATshawDOTca if you would like contact info, and
I'll see if I can put you in touch with them.

We have set up a roving satellite operation for our school/community
centre.
www.rural-web.org
We chose NOT to use the big professional satellite dishes.
We chose a small satellite receiver from Inmarsat (called the BGAN) which
only provides 128k, and charges for throughput. We then back-to-back that
with a wireless AP.
Instant on-line wireless lan.

For economy we add a cache as the throughput charges are $15 per MB I
think. However if you avoid the Microsoft service packs while you are
actually in the field it might suit your e-mail / light download needs.

p.s. When I said small I meant it. Think small laptop

Good luck

For about $5K you can get a motorized GPS-equipped self-pointing dish
for 2-way satellite service. Several companies make these for RV
owners who want satellite TV and internet, and they work all over
North America. I think typical speeds are around 768/128 for the
Direcway systems, but there might be business class options available.

Add a router and some wired/wireless network gear and you're done,
except for the tech support. I doubt you'd get away with your desired
fire & forget cut 'em loose for two weeks plan, as users will always
do things to screw up their network settings, and it's always your
fault.

Google for "rv satellite internet" for a bunch of links.
