T-Mobile and 3 Network are both offering high speed broadband access via
a modem, both require some form of contract.

Anyone know how these modems work, is there a sim card (Or similar)
inside and if after the contract ends one doesn't stay with the company
do you end up with a £100 doorstop or can it be used with another company.

Can't answer specifically for the T-Mobile and 3 devices, but I have seen
them from others.

Yes, there is a SIM inside.
No, its not a small doorstep when the contract ends, but like any phone it
could, in theory, be locked to a particular provider. That said, the ones I
have seen have been open devices rather than locked to a provider.

They work surprisingly well.
I have the TMobile one.
The only issues you need to consider are:

1. TMobile block some ports and some content on some tarrifs, you need to
make sure you get the right tarrif.
2. TMobile's 3G coverage is woeful unless you are going to use it in a major
city. Elsewhere you are likely to find it switching to GPRS.

The modem actually downloads the software intot the PC so you don't need a
driver disc.
I loaned mine to a woman on the train yesterday because the GNER wifi was
not working.
I actually share mine with two other people as we are never away from the
office at the same time so the £10 per month is a real bargain.

We also use it on Linux laptops by using the Vodafone connection software
for Linux (Vodafone use the same chinese made modem for their service so the
drivers work).

Hope that helps!

Thanks Gordon, my computer club is looking in to broadband via mobile
for our network as we can't use our present fixed line for ADSL.
