Moan About Freeserve....?

Not me. I've been with Freeserve since its inception...though dial-up and
now broadband.

Not once have I had a complaint. Not once have I needed to complain.

The connection has always been there, d/l's have been good, speed has been
good--if you can call dial-up speed "good".

All in all, I've been impressed with the service.

The one thing I haven't needed to use, is telephone tech support. Perhaps
this is where a lot of peoples complaints arise.

But then, I know what I'm doing....

Take care

Paul

You've always been able to get a connection? Amazing. I've witnessed
friends with Freeserve Anytime make in excess of forty attempts over a
three hour period and fail to make a successful connection on any one
attempt. Victims of their own success maybe?

Speed was below average when connected, even for dial up, telephone
support was abysmal (my friend used it when trying to find out why he
couldn't connect) The service seemed to suffer every time they started
advertising and slowly improved over the next month or so as people
realised it's not what it was cracked up to be. Have you ever tried to
resolve a Freeserve user name to an IP address, it seems that Freeserve
dialup works a little like AOL in that way.

Underwhelmed, but they are as good as many cheap ISPs I suppose.

It is dreadful considering you have to pay premium rates to speak to
them, free support I can just about accept being slow, premium rate
should be premium quality, but it seems to be another revenue stream.

Good for you. Many don't and Freeserve is aimed at that kind of person,
evidence; the stupid 'Hippy' adverts and the piles of Freeserve CDs at
shop checkouts. For an ISP aimed at that level of user, they are pretty
bad.

Because their SMTP server is pants.

If they/it decide they don't like the look of an email, they will drop it,
and not tell you.

About 6 months ago, I was sending an email out to a list of people I'd set
up. Freeserve kept dropping messages to one section, which emailed 12 people
at once.

A bit of sniffing round showed (IIRC) that they kill any email with >8
recipients, because they assume it's spam. They didn't have the decency to
send a "mail failure notification", the email just disappeared.

Because of this, I had to jump through hoops, splitting up any list with >8
recipients into 2 lists, or I had to contact "the powers that be" and get
their permission to send emails.

I didn't even have the option of using my paid-for SMTP service, because
Freeserve hijack any port 25 traffic and send it to their servers.

They also don't allow you to sent .exe files, "because they may be viruses",
but are quite happy to allow other people to send you virus laden .exe and
..scr files.

Pete.

Pete
I've not experienced this. I send out a quarterly newsletter to 100+
recipients in one go and so far no-one has told me that they haven't
received it. (Thats not as daft as it sounds 'cos they're all
expecting it to arrive!)
Perhaps I've just been lucky?

Exceptionally.

OTOH, they could have turned off this "feature", because I was moaning about
it when we were telling all our friends & relatives we were expecting a baby
(so it'll be ~12th July last year IIRC), and one or two other people also
complained about it.

I've found the thread on Google Groups...

http://makeashorterlink.com/?O11661317 - it's easier :-)

It'll also depend how your software is sending the emails. If it's one at a
time, it's OK. If it's just in one big chunk, this is where my problem lay.

To ensure the emails were getting out, I had to include myself in each sub-
list. This is how I know they weren't being sent!

As per Terms of Service, which you agreed to when you signed up.

Gee, that must have been hard? Take one list with 16 users, and split it
into two with 8 users.

I've sent .exe files, .zip files, .doc files, .scr files...in fact, just
about every file-type imaginable, all with no problems. The recipients have
received the e-mails complete with attachments. Perhaps, if the mail is
being rejected, it is the ISP to who you are sending the mail who is
rejecting it. I know AOL currently blocks e-mails with .exe attachments.

So, problem "existed", but because you and a couple of your pals complained,
Freeserve change their mind? Are you sure it wasn't a case of you at last
finding out how to send to multiple recipients? Just a thought.
