I don't know whats going on anymore.I've read the
threads, and now add me to the list of disappointed
users. I bought a mn700 and mn720 late December. After
spending hours setting it up, and then realizing that an
update was my problem, I finally got it running. It's
been running pretty good since then...until now...:
1)all of a sudden...images not loading on full page while
surfing
2)network seems very slow
3)seems to be a 2-3 second lag
4)random internet connection drops...even though signal
is excellent.
I have all the latest firmware and windows updates. Have
reset modem and base stn.
I have noticed that if I look at the internet connection
status, the duration of connection time seems to stall
every few seconds. I don't think this is normal.
Can't disable IEEE 802.1 authentication as the box
is "greyed out".
I'm no tech guy by the way..just your average home user.
I don't know anymore...could it be related to doing
microsoft updates or what?
Anyways..I'm not happy.
Just needed to vent....
..........
......Still not happy.

Currently, there are a lot of "worms" going around the Internet, causing a
bit of havoc with excessive traffic from infected machines. You might want
to check the information here: http://www.microsoft.com/security/

Not saying that's what is happening on your system, but if you're not having
graphics display properly in your browser, have you cleared your cache
lately? Have you run your anti-virus program thoroughly on your computer
lately?

Have you checked your system with one of the free Trojan-detecting programs
like AdAware from www.lavasoftusa.com? You can even check your browser for
parasites which might be infecting it free online on Microsoft MVP Jim
Eshelman's web site: http://aumha.org/a/parasite.php

Are you running WPA encryption on your system, if so that's why IEEE 802.1x
authentication is required. Have you checked with your Internet Service
Provider to see if they're having issues? Have you looked in the base
station log to see if your computer is under attack?

Yes..I have all that:
Norton Professional 2004
Full scan Feb 8/04
I run Spybot and Adaware 6.
Also...Empty cache on browser exit automatically.
There is most definitely some type of lag somewhere...I
do speed tests while running AnalogX Netstat, and I can
see the lag there as the graph is "spiky". It's some type
of random drop...sometimes the internet connection drops
completely and I get a balloon display saying that it has
reconnected. I'm scratching my head at this.

Sorry...lost connection again...
Yes I'm using WPA.
Base log is showing some port scanning.
Desktop (wired)..not experiencing problem so I'm assuming
it's not an ISP issue.
Thanks for your response Chris.

So this is just happening with the MN-720, Rob? If that's the case, do you
have any cordless phones in the house? How about trying a different
channel? It could be you're near a neighbor who is running on the same
channel and it is causing interference.

Rob,

It's just the wireless portion of the router... it's
garbage. I have the mn-700 and the mn-730 and the wired
portion works great but the wireless has the same
symptoms as you.

There are a zillion people here all with the same
problem. Chris, what is it going to take to have
Microsoft put a fix out for it?

Dee, to be honest, I don't know. I'm just a user as you are. Personally, I
run the MN-700, MN-720, MN-730, MN-740 - all using 54G - and the only
problem I have is one laptop with the 720 loses the LAN (only) when it comes
out of Standby. It still maintains the Internet just fine, but I hear about
it when my wife can't print to the LAN printer.

I also have the MN-500 and the various adapters from that series running on
systems in our home, also all without problems on 802.11b.

That's why I ask questions, trying to get a clue as to what is going on. If
I can run this hardware, which others are calling "junk," then I would
expect other users, who have probably more smarts than I, can do so, too.

I've switched channels---->same problem.
No cordless phones.
Netstumbler sees no other networks, and I'm not aware of
any neighbours having wireless.
Just finished scanning using NAV, adaware and spybot to
make sure no worms---->clean
Verified connectivity on desktop---->no problem...100%
This just started happening to me the last few`days. All
of a sudden it's just slow. Web browsing is like dialup
sometimes with the lag.
I do have issues when coming out of standby, but
repairing seems to help.
When it works, it works great:
dsl ppoe
2004-02-11 22:39:38 EST: 2544 / 647
Your download speed : 2544695 bps, or 2544 kbps.
A 310.6 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 647773 bps, or 647 kbps.
Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!
With speeds recorded like above, the images aren't all
loading, there is a delay or a lag of about 2-3 seconds
before loading the page. No delay on the wired desktop.
Signal strength excellent. I just don't get it!
Thanks again Chris...and Dee

If it is any consolation, I'm finding the Internet slow tonight, too. These
is massive worm/virus activity going on, in case you've missed it. If you
can get there, check out the Mydoom virus alert: http://www.microsoft.com/

Thanks for your time Chris...I'll keep checking
back...maybe MyDoom is at the root of it all, but I don't
see how it would account for random drops of connectivity
within my home network. Do you know if Microsoft monitors
this newsgroup for user issues? Like I said
earlier,...it's been a good stable router for almost 2
months, then bang. I hope a fix is in the pipes soon!
Thanks again.
