MN500 bridging

My network access can read the wireless signal some
distance from my MN500 basestation, but I want to extend
the range. I know a second MN500 can be used to bridge,
but do both need to be set to bridging ? or just the
second one ?

Hi,

The second MN-500 needs to be set to bridging. While the first one can be
left to router mode.

I have tried that, but can't seem to connect..do I need
to change to bridging mode after connecting to the modem
and base station that are already configured. Do I need
to set up the second base station with all the setting
(SSID, WEP etc) prior to switching to bridging ?

You need to set it up like this

Broadband modem --> WAN port of MN-500 #1
MN-500 #1 LAN port #2 --> WAN port of MN-500 #2

Make sure all MN-500s are running the latest firmware 1.11.017

Now lets look at the setup of each MN-500:

MN-500 #1
router mode
LAN IP address at default of 192.168.2.1
some SSID
some WEP key
channel 6

MN-500 #2
bridge mode
LAN IP address at 192.168.2.42, outside of default DHCP range
same SSID
same WEP key
channel 1

If you keep the SSID and WEP key the same for all base stations, people will
be able to move between access points and get a connection. You need to
select
non-overlapping channels for the base stations to prevent interference.
Channels 1, 6, and 11 are the three non-overlapping channels. There are more
combinations if you only need two channels.

once I have this set up this way, can I disconnect the MN-
500 #2 from LAN port of MN-500 #1, and have it at the
other end of the house, only connected to a power
source ?

No
It must remain wired.

If you unplug the cable, any wireless devices that associate with the MN500
with nothing plugged into it, it won't have internet access (nor connect to
other computers going through the other router)

Jeez! What a crock!

Then how does one go about extending the wireless range?

Does someone make a bridge that will work with the MN-500/700? How about the
Linksys WET54G or the WET11?

Or do we need to scrap the M$ products altogether to get products that have
range and are adaptable?

TIA
