I just bought a Cat 5e wired house and want to put the
modem, hub, and router in the closet with the phone and
dcable tv service. The 820 kit directions show the
router connected to the computer and the modem. Will I
have to have the desktop computer on for the router to
connect to the modem with my laptop using the 720 card?

The instructions say not to load the software or attach
the computer to the modem unless I have a broadband
connection. I was wondering how true this is. I must be
able to just load the laptop to run the 720 card for Wifi
sites.

Let me have a little help.

The software does two different jobs. It programs the router as long as
you are not running Windows 2000. The other job is configuring wireless
connections on OS's before Windows XP.

To connect the hub you will need to either use the uplink port on the
hub or a crossover cable.

It is recommended that you program the router from a wired computer.

It is possible to configure it via wireless, but it is much more difficult.

So it is okay to remote locate the equipment from the
laptop? All the computers are currently running XP,
except a spare computer with 98. I will connect the hub
through the uplink port on the hub as suggested. I will
link through the desktop ethernet port. thanks for the
heads up.

Twisted pair Ethernet has a limit of 100 Meters. If you are at that
length or shorter you are fine.
