MN-710 NIC and D-Link 802.11b Router

I am using a MN-710 USB Wireless G to connect to a
802.11b D-Link router. However, the connection speed
keep jumping between 11Mbps and 2Mpbs. Is this a
compatability issue?

More likely an interference issue. You might try changing channels.
