I recently purchased a Microsoft MN-710 USB adapter and am
running it on a XP box... I have a public free wi-fi
signal which happens to be a hotel close to me which is
using channel 1 and I can get the signal to Very Good and
sometimes excellent... The problem is that the connection
seems to stall when the NIC adjusts the speed of the
connection, its an 802.11b so the max on their end is of
course 11Mbps but everytime the connect speed shifts upto
that 11Mpbs top speed the network activity will completely
stop and once it kinda lowers back down to 1 or 2Mbps it
will continue to send but its very unsteady... I ran
netstumbler and there is also a Tmobile hotspot in the
area which is actually much farther away, now I don't have
internet access there but they do have a site setup i can
connect to and download the connection manager software
and that transfers very fast (80kpbs) which i believe is a
good speed for a very low to low signal... The TMobile
hotspot also happens to be on channel 1... My question is
how can i force the NIC to stay on 1 or 2mpbs?? I used to
have a mn-510 and there was a setting under the network
card configuration in device manager... The 710 has no
such option and I was hoping there was perhaps a way to
lock it down to 1 or 2 or perhaps figure out what the deal
is with this problem.... Are there any generic drivers out
there that will work with this NIC? Does microsoft have an
older version of the driver with that option? I can get
the signal upto around -65db and still have problems yet
the tmobile is around -80db and its a great connection,
BTW netstumbler says the wireless hotel network is run on
a symbol AP... Any help is appreciated please reply here
