MN-710 appears to cause computer to stop

I have an MN-710 installed on my computer running Windows
XP with SP 2. It connects very nicely with my network
gateway. Signal strength is high. However, after some
time, usually more than 15 minutes, the computer fails to
respond. It has to be rebooted.

This happens when I leave the computer on while doing
other tasks (e.g. laundry.) It happens when I am in the
midst of using other programs that do not require internet
access. It happens when I am on the net or reading email.
This happened before installing SP 2 as well as after. It
happens if I have the Broadband Networking utility
installed, it happens if I don't have the utility
installed.

But, it does not happen when the computer is on standby.
This problem does not occur if the Gateway is directly
connected to this computer. It does not happen when a 56K
modem is connected to this computer. It does not happen
when no internet access point is connected to this
computer. So, it is probably not the computer.

I've talked to my computer maker's help desk and to
various knowledgeable computer types. They say this is
characteristic of the USB adapter.

Should I toss the MN-710 in the charity box and forge on?

You may want to do the following then.

Go to http://housecall.antivirus.com & do an online virus scan for free.
(I've seen several viruses cause the symptoms that you are seeing.)

Download, Install, Update, & then scan for spyware with both ad-aware &
"Spybot Search & Destroy".

Also it might be the USB controller so you might try a different USB port.

One last thing are you using a USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 port?

I have the same issue (after I installed SP2) - any ideas
on how to fix this? I need to reboot to regain my wifi
connection!

Thanks for the useful information. I didn't mention that
this computer is an AMD 64+. A local computer show
mentioned that there is an unspecified conflict between the
chip and SP 2. Don't know how this would be relevant as all
else works well.

I have 2.0 USB ports and have the MN 710 plugged into one
that worked well with my printer. Also tried one that was
used successfully by my PDA and another used by the
external hard drive. So that doesn't "seem" to be the problem.

I have Spybot (most recent version) on board. It appears
to be intercepting spyware. I have McAfee virus scan and it
reveals no virus. I will be happy to try the free online
virus scan as well, as I like cross checks.

Could this problem involve "power" saving settings in the
control panel? If so, where should they be set?

Thanks again.

I always set my computer to presentation mode that way none of the
annoying power saving features cause me problems.
