Dear MarkS,
One suggestion to monitor singal strength and discover if
its an HW defect is to download NetStumbler 0.4
(netstumbler.com). It has a feature which real-time logs
the singal output from the base, as detected by your
adapter.
Probably not a final solution, but aprt way...
