MN-700 reconnect question

I am using an MN-700 with dynamic IP DSL, specifically SBC/Yahoo.

About once a week or so I get disconnected. It's not for idleness--I have
some security cams that are monitored from elsewhere so there's always
traffic. Maybe the ISP just deliberately limits the maximum time, I don't
know.

What I'm wondering is why there doesn't seem to be any setting on the MN-
700 where you can have it auto reconnect when set for dynamic IP. There is
such a thing when used with PPoE but not dynamic IP. Seems kind of odd.
The router "knows" when it's offline from the internet, if I find the
connection dead and log onto the router it says so. And of course it only
takes a mouse click to reconnect. Is there no way to have one thing
(disconnect detection) automatically lead to another thing (reconnection)?
Or is this one of those things where you shake your head and say, well it's
Microsoft.

Also, seems to me that in the past I'd find that my IP had changed but I'd
stay online. Now more recently I just get disconnected altogether and of
course as you would expect the IP is different when reconnecting. Not sure
why that changed. With the former situtation I was going to check out one
of those arrangements where a change in IP is communicated to the
monitoring software at the other end which can thus stay connected. But if
the connection is dropping and there's no auto reconnect that would be
useless and even springing for static IP service would be a waste of money
if it drops now and then (I don't see an auto reconnect under that setting
either).

When I was using the MN-500 my ISP never did this to me. Have you
talked to them asking them why they are doing this. It does sound to me
like they are kicking you off the network for some reason. I do know
that the when my MN-500 would lose it's WAN connection it would
constantly try to connect to the WAN until it got a new IP address. So
I'm guessing your ISP is not behaving properly in this respect. Of
course I could be wrong, but that is my best guess & seeing as no one
else has come up with anything else there you go.

If your question is worth asking, it's worth posting.

If it’s not worth posting you should have done a search on
http://www.google.com/ http://www.google.com/grphp?hl=en&tab=wg&q= or
http://news.google.com/froogle?hl=en&tab=nf&ned=us&q= before wasting our
time.

If I sound hostile or arrogant you need to read the following before
posting a question "How To Ask Questions The Smart Way" at

to just has this article I think people should read before posting a
technical question.)

But no auto reconnect? I didn't just not see how to do it? That's enough
to get a router from someone else.

Check the base station log. Mine would say that it was still trying to
get an IP address, sometimes for hours or more.

When the service provider makes a change in their system, sometimes both my
DSL modem and router suddenly aren't kicking into gear. I unplug the modem,
unplug the router and go into the kitchen to freshen my coffee. Then I plug
in the modem and let it do its thing until the lights are solid. Then I
plug in the router, and it handshakes with the modem. My MN-700 does it and
the Linksys WRT55AG does the same thing.

They sometimes lose their way, but the easy was is to relax for about three
minutes and let everything settle.

I never did get to use my MN-500 on DSL because Qwest uses PPPoA & all
of the other ISP's they have listed use it as well. So I had to get a
different router. Oh well. I will say I never had a problem with my
MN-500 after I installed the 1.08.003 firmware right after I got it. At
that time I was still supporting them & I knew about all the problems
with the old firmware.

Hey Joe - This is a bit off topic, I have Qwest DSL as well (PPPoA), what
router did you end up using?

Thanks,
Tony Brocato

The Actiontec GT701-WG with Firmware Version: QW04-3.60.2.0.6.3. My
brother who does DSL support for Qwest said it is an ok router, so long
as you are running that firmware version or newer.
