MN-700 with Linksys Wireless-G

Running Windows XP, I had my network and internet access
working fine with my desktop PC connected to the MN-700
via an ethernet cable and a separate laptop with the MS
wireless card. I now wish to run my desktop PC wireless,
so I purchased a Linksys Wireless-G card (model
WMP54GS). I installed the card, and am able to connect
to the wireless network, but cannot get an internet
connection working. It seems that the only way I can get
on the wireless network is by configuring the network as
an ad hoc network (by checking the box labelled "This is
a computer-to-computer (ad hoc) network; wireless access
points are not used"). I'm not sure if that's what's
causing me to be unable to get an internet connection. I
know that the router is able to connect to the internet
because everything works if I plug my network cable back
in.

Any help that anyone can provide would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks,
Bob

Are you using the linksys software to configure your wireless connection?

No, I'm using Windows, as the manual suggests. Can I fix
this problem by using the linksys software? What settings
would I need to change?

Thanks,
Bob

I was going to suggest against even keeping it installed. Since it is a
wireless connection I'll ask some more questions.

1) Are you broadcasting the SSID? (Disabling the broadcast is not a
valid form of security.)

2) Have you tried changing the wireless channel from the router?

3) what's the firmware version on the router?

4) Have you checked if there is a firmware update for the linksys NIC?

5) What kind of wireless security are you using? (Examples are WEP,
WPA, & MAC filtering)

6) Have you installed the 815485 or the 826942 update?

7) Do you have 802.1x authentication enabled on your wireless connection?

8) Please read the following articles 313242, 314897, 324024, 811057,
814154, 814444, 821400, 821442, 822725, 823370, 826239, 827537, 828940,
831277, 831749, 834525, 834565, 836516, 837911, & 841800. (I only gave
you a partial list of the wireless articles I know about. I know of 62
public and one none public.)

9) Run "ping www.homestead.com" from the command prompt

10) Run "ping 209.157.71.50" from the command prompt

11) Run "tracert www.homestead.com" from the command prompt

12) Run "tracert 209.157.71.50" from the command prompt

If you give me the results from those 4 tests (9-14), read the articles
I mentioned in 8, & answer the questions I asked I can help you out better.

For the Tracert I want to know on which hop it died (meaning the hop
with three "*") it's IP address & the IP address just before it, if it
made it all the way, or if it couldn't find the server.

An example of what I'm looking for with the tracert is something like this
"14 * 307 ms * 209.157.68.36
15 414 ms 700 ms 403 ms sitebuilderlpx.com [209.157.71.50]

Trace complete."

The results I just showed suck because I'm downloading 8 bit torrents
right when I did the test. That always kills my results. Of course you
always get worse results when you are already downloading when you do
the test.

I solved my own problem. Being somewhat ignorant about
hardware, I didn't realize that I'd have to add a new MAC
address for the new wireless card to my list of MAC
addresses that were being filtered. Doing that solved the
problem.
