Hello,

I just upgraded my connection with bellsouth to DSL extreme, this include a
static IP ,

I went to configure this but I could not complete it cause of the netmask,
it seems that 255.255.255.255 is not recognized as a valid netmask , what
can I do in this case?

Thanks in advance.

Not sure what IP address you were attempting to use (that would be useful to
know) but why not try:
255.255.255.0 or, 255.255.0.0.

In any case, please post the IP address you have and the subnet mask will be
easier to guess. Whoever assigned you the static IP should have also
provided the subnet mask!

HTH

You mean less then one computer is on its own network (-2 IP addresses
total with that subnet mask). 255.255.255.252 would allow the least
number of computers in a network.

Besides who was the ID10T that said you should use a 255.255.255.255
subnet mask?

The guys at bellsouth

I found it really weird at the start, but I was having trouble with the
connection and decided to follow step by step what they said

I have it working now, it resulted that I have to select PPPoE instead of
Static IP and they assure I will get the same IP all the time.

Btw, IIRC you can especify a 255.255.255.255 netmask, it indicate an
especific computer.
Take a look at this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000...ting_table.htm

Yes, a netmask of 255.255.255.255 is legal, and might have some specific
value at times, but I would think it highly unlikely that an ISP would ever
set things up in any way that required that mask. Glad to hear you have it
working... The guys at BellSouth should have included the very important
nugget that you were on PPPoE! All they are doing is reserving an IP for
you (likely by the MAC address of the router)... "pseudo-static" but static
enough for most purposes.

According to them it's based on the username I'm using.
