Yes, a netmask of 255.255.255.255 is legal, and might have some specific
value at times, but I would think it highly unlikely that an ISP would ever
set things up in any way that required that mask. Glad to hear you have it
working... The guys at BellSouth should have included the very important
nugget that you were on PPPoE! All they are doing is reserving an IP for
you (likely by the MAC address of the router)... "pseudo-static" but static
enough for most purposes.
