I have wireless network setup and I downloaded updates for
XP tonight. After doing so I could not access internet.
Said my encryption key was invalid. Uninstalled and
reinstalled software and network card now when i try to
update the setting for the adaptor i get error that
setting could not be applied please retry. Any
ideas/suggestions.

Thanks for any help

Thanks for the article Chris but it still doesn't work.
On my base station pc I have uninstalled the software for
the network and the internet and reinstalled. I then
retried the laptop (I had previously uninstalled the
networking software on it) and still no go. When I go
into the networking utility I can "see" the network but
the setting will not apply to the adaptor.

Have you disabled any Services in Control Panel/Administrative
Tools/Services? If so, you should revert back to the default settings.

No I have not disabled any services. This whole proble
started when I had download a couple of updates from
windows site and got the message that my wep key was
incorrect. Before I downloaded the updates the wireless
was working perfectly

excellent strength I can "see" the network name but it
will not connect. It might be connect for a second or two
and then disconnects. I have already done the restore to
factory defaults but to no avail. PLease help me before I
tear my hair out. Been two very long nights trying to get
this stupid thing to work !!!!!! Argh !!!!!!!!

It WORKS !!!!!!!
Thanks you Chris for your help. I was looking at the
articles you had suggested and then I looked at some other
postings here and found one that I tried. I reset to
factory defaults and used default name for netwok id. The
very last thing that I decided to do was reanable the
security encryption key and after I did that on the home
page for the base station it picked up the laptop. Thanks
again. I will be certin to use this group if I have any
more problems with the network.

Steve

Bravo, Steve! I think what happened somewhere was one of the systems
changed back to the default Workgroup name. If the base station was
whatever you named it, then the other machine(s) wouldn't coincide and, of
course, the WEP key wouldn't be valid since it was a different Workgroup.
Glad you got it fixed.
