MN-500 - sudden email problem

I have been using an MN-500 for about 30 days. No problems until last
night when a long-standing and well-functioning email account stopped
working (using outlook). So I started to troubleshoot it this
morning. Nothing had changed on my side. I called server-side tech
support and confirmed that nothing had changed on their side.

I took the MN-500 out of the loop by connecting a laptop directly to
the DSL modem. The email worked flawlessly. Confirmed & reproduced
the same result with a second laptop. I then plugged both laptops
back into the MN-500 and reconfirmed that the problem persisted.

So I hardware reset and reconfigured the MN-500. No good. So I
upgraded the firmware to V1.11.017. No good. So I hardware reset and
reconfigured the MN-500 with the new firmware. No good, email still
doesn't work.

I have some network admin experience, this isn't some basic fully
qualified domain name problem. The POP server has no unusual settings
and works perfectly fine if I take the MN-500 out of the picture.

One troubling observation (observed with the MN-500 in the loop): last
night I was unable to send email but could get it, for the past five
hours I could send it but not receive it. Current error message seems
to indicate that I can contact the POP server but do not get an reply:

Task '******** Account - Sending and Receiving' reported error
(0x8004210A) : 'The operation timed out waiting for a response from
the receiving (POP) server. If you continue to receive this message,
contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

Thanks,

Ben

You need to reconfigure your outlook software to work behind a router.

Those things happen occasionally. Probably maintenance at
your ISP, overloading of the mail servers (read worm
attacks), or some traffic jam on the Internet (again,
worm attacks). Nothing to do with the router.

Try doing a tracert to your email servers, and see if the
traffic is jamming somewhere (typically something in
1000's or a * hints at some trouble). Often this goes
away by itself, as the worm attack fades away.

Problem fixed. I powered the DSL modem on and off after the router
upgrade and hardware reset. Things run great again.
