the 169.x.x.x ip address is a APIPA (Automatic Private IP Addressing )
address.
That means that your computer is not connecting to the DHCP server that it
was hoping to connect to.
Are you sure your DSL doesn't use a PPPoE client? or does it use DHCP.
You should check with your ISP to make sure you have the proper instructions
for connecting to them.
