I am unable to hook up to internet, DSL, using my ethernet

auto select, is defaulting back to a 169..... number which
is a microsoft ip address. Please help.

the 169.x.x.x ip address is a APIPA (Automatic Private IP Addressing )
address.
That means that your computer is not connecting to the DHCP server that it
was hoping to connect to.

Are you sure your DSL doesn't use a PPPoE client? or does it use DHCP.

You should check with your ISP to make sure you have the proper instructions
for connecting to them.
