He tried that, thanks. What it turned out to be was that there were
remnants of Zone Alarm on his system. He had uninstalled it, but some
services were still there. He ended up reinstalling Zone Alarm and
taking it out with their Uninstaller instead of using Add Remove
Programs. Now everything works and he has the newest Messenger too.
