I have windows 98 on my desktop; the kids have windows xp
on their compaq laptops; I have been unable to get a web
cam working on the desktop - says it wants windows 98 se -
will i have similar difficulties if i try to network our
computers together?

Any version of Windows from Windows 95 up has networking components built
in, so aside from the possibility that you don't configure things right
there's no reason you wouldn't be able to network them.
