Missing folders on network share
I have some users saying that folders are missing from a shared area on the
network (Windows server 2003). I have a number of undelete and rescue
applications, but nothing is showing as deleted. I have searched in case the
folders have been moved without success. Any ideas?

Hello,

any disk error in the eventlog ?
is the disk flagged as dirty ? (fsutil dirty query c: for example)

Did someone checked the "hidden" property box ?
(did you look with explorer showing hidden files option?)

Hi,

No errors reported and the disk is clean. The hidden bit is not set.

Regards,

John

Do you have any backup software to be sure of users saying ?
It may have been renamed too somewhere else

Dollars to donuts, someone has inadvertently or deliberately deleted or
dragged/moved stuff. This doesn't happen on its own!

Since you have W2003, you should be running volume shadow copy
services....if you aren't, or if it's been too long since the damage was
done, you'll need to go back to tape. VSS is a lifesaver, and if it isn't
enabled now, do it!

Hi,
I have backups, but the last time the "missing" folders were used could be
anything up to a year ago, and none of the users are sure last time they were
used. My feelings are that they have been moved, possibly to a users home
drive, and they have then deleted the folders thinking they were duplicates.
Regards,
John.

Hi,
See previous post about backup and moving files. The files would not have
been deliberately deleted, unless is was by the user themselves, as the four
folders involved belong to 4 different users, and no one else has access to
them.
VSS is not installed on the servers. We are an educational/charity
establishment and have to work to a very tight budget. Now that this has
happened we will probably get some funding to buy some more disk space for
VSS, although as the folders may not have been accesses for a year, see
previous post, VSS may not help in this case.
Regards,
John

As they have not been used for a year it shows the difference between
archiving and backup.
99.99% likely that someone deleted them, as there is a logical pattern to
what is missing, but if you don't make a periodic archive there is no way to
get them back. A tape rotation policy should be putting one a month and one
a year into archive (or whatever suits you).

Then inadvertently deleted. As I said, this cannot happen magically on its
own.

No, the horses are gone. But you might still get a lock for the barn door.
Disks are cheap nowadays.
