Misleading WiFi Speed

I've got a 54mbps Access Point, a 54mbps PC card and a 11mbps USB
adapter.

Out of curiosity I transfered a 10MB file between two computers using
a WiFi link, the USB 11 mbps adapter was used.

Using a stop watch it took 61 seconds = 1.31mbps, my SYSMON on Win98
showed the network transfer as roughly 187KB per second which is about
1.49mbps

bearing in mind both readings were quite close I would assume they are
accurate.

Both computers were quite close to the Access Point and signal was
reported as good.

So, they claim 11mbps and in good conditions I get 1.5mbps, 1/7th of
what the makers claim.

I have never managed to measure more than ~5 Mbps.

What is the bandwidth of the USB - is this a constraint ? or the hard
disk ?

USB. Good for about 12 megabits a second IIRC. Are you running it off a
powered hub?

It is USB 1 but this claims 11mbps, as for HD I'm not sure.

Yes, it is off a powered hub but I was under the impression it would
not have touched that part of the network.
