Hi,

I've got an HP PhotoSmart 1218 USB printer that I'd like to print
wirelessly to
from a Dell 1100 notebook running XP Pro and a Mac Powerbook G4
running OS X 10.2.

I currently have no wireless gear at all. I'm not interested in
wireless broadband access to the Internet; only wireless printing.

What's the minimum gear I need? I'm guessing the following:

1) A Linksys WPS54GU2 Wireless-G Print Server, to which I attach the
HP PhotoSmart.

2) On the Dell 1100, an external 802.11g wireless card.

3) On the Powerbook, use its built-in 802.11b wireless.

Can I get by with just the above? Or do I also need an Airport
base station? Or other gear?

Thanks.

BB

Download the print server manual from Linksys web site and review to see
if it can communicate peer to peer rather than as a network (connection)
device.

Linksys doesn't support AppleTalk nor EtherTalk so check the manual for
LPT like connections which Mac OS X can support.

If none of the above works as hoped, then get a wirless router which
will facilate all three working together. You don't have to an Airport
base station as any 11g wireles router will do, but, since you have the
Linksys print server, you might want to look into a WRT54G router for
compatibility reasons with the print server.

I have a Netgear wgr614 and use Belkin 11g PCI cards in my Mac desktops
since the Belkin uses the Broadcom chipset as does Apple Airport cards.
I have wired AXIS print servers for my two inkject and Laserwriter 360
printers. Everything plays together nicely.

Lastly, make sure the router is easily returnable to where you purchased
it since not all brands play with one another like they're suppose to do.
