I've got a Toshiba Satellite 1905 series. It's set up for a mini-PCI
wireless card, but Toshiba is trying to charge $150 for a new card. Does
anyone know if there would be any problems with the Dell mini-PCI they have
on their website? Also, are there any other mini-PCI cards that are
available (besides on E-bay)?

Thanks in advance

Check thouroughly before buying.. The IBM laptops (at least the T40's) won't
accept mini-PCI wireless cards are not sold by IBM.

How much would you really be saving, and is it worth the hassle? I
found an Agere wireless card (made for Toshiba I think) for just under
$100. It installed easily in the mini-PCI slot and Windows XP already
has the built-in drivers. You might save a few bucks trying a
different card, but is it really worth potentially hours of hassle to
make it work?

The Dell card is under $50, and on a college student's budget, that extra
$50 - $100 dollars means a lot. Where did you get the Agere card from?

Soooo...you're saying that you saved 33% off the regular Toshiba price
and it worked just fine for you, but no one else should try it because
it's such a pain?

I'm in the same boat as iamChris, and have been considering the same
thing.

If I can get the same functionality for $50 less, I think I can handle
inserting the card myself.

Er - what? I recommended he do what I did: buy the Agere card and
install it himself. Will the Dell card install just as easily as mine
did? It could - I don't know. (aside from the mini-PCI connector,
the more important thing to consider is whether the internal antenna
will plug into the Dell card as easily as did they do into the Agere
card.) Even if the hardware works, you have to consider the drivers
and sofware support. If you are on a budget and have a lot of free
time, it could be worth it to try to make one of these cards work, I
suppose.

You might want to do a Google groups search of the comp.sys.laptops
group for a thread a few months back about a couple of pins on the
Toshiba mini-PCI slot being swapped from other cards, FYI.

FYI, I have a toshiba 3500 tablet PC. Replaced the mini-pci card with
a Dell Truemobile 1400 I got for about $70. It's a mini-pci
802.11a/b/g card. Works great. I know people with several flavors of
Toshiba and it's worked in theirs. Also fujitsu. So at least the
1400 would work in your toshiba if you want to swap it out.

Thanks to everybody for their resposes. I went ahead and ordered a Dell card
from their website. I'll post an update when I try it out just to let
others in the same boat as I am know whether it's going to work.

Has anyone tried running one of the antenna sockets on a mini-PCI out to
the outside of the laptop? Perhaps using something like this

U.HF to RP-SMA Bulkhead:
http://www.demarctech.com/products/r...e-assemblies.h
tml

What's the chipset on the Dell A/B/G mini PCI card? Atheros?
