MIgrating your ADSL account - did it work?

I'm interested to hear from users who have tried to "migrate" their
ADSL account from one ISP to another and had problems, or even total
failure.

In particular I'd like to hear from anyone who has had trouble getting
the old ISP to cough up the CBUK number of their ADSL circuit, or
where the old ISP has refused to co-operate with the migration for
reasons other than "customer has unpaid bills" or "customer is within
minimum contract period".

And I'd be interested to hear from anyone where the old ISP have
"cancelled" the account mid-way through the migrate process, leaving
them with a disconnected service and having to wait for a "new
service" order to be processed by the new ISP, or disabled the users's
account so that he can't log in to the old service until the migrate
happens and he can start using the new service.

Of course, this information will be more useful if you tell me *who*
the old ISP was in each case.

Individual information will be held confidential, but I'll post the
tally here for general consumption.

Cheers!

Just so you can hear it from the ISP side. Migrations usually are okay and
without problem unless you are with AOL or Freeserve who formally do not take
part in the migration system and also refuse any requests from their userbase
to migrate away.....desperate huh?

To migrate all the ISP you move to needs is the CBUK number for your line,
which BT refuses to hand the end users but you should be able to extract from
your ISP, if they complain about the data protection act tell them that the
data protection act also lets the customer know what information the ISP has
on them, yadda yadda.

Now in the case of AOL/Freeserve, if you want to migrate, you actually have
to turn off your ADSL connection and then do a fresh apply, all other ISP's
as far as I know take part in the migration process; so you should be trouble
free. The other interesting thing is although a fresh install takes about
seven to ten days, a migration takes anywhere between 15 and 30 and thats if
BT do not lose the orders which they often do. :-/

One other thing you will want to bear in mind is that apparently Freeserve
sent an e-mail to all its customers asking "if they were interested in ADSL"
and to those that said they were _interested_ Freeserve placed an advanced
order to lock the customer to only be able to get ADSL through Freeserve, as
Freeserve have formally placed an order with BT. So if you are a Freeserve
user who said "I am interested" and then your exchange gets activated and/or
you decide to get ADSL with another ISP tough luck; you have to get Freeserve
to cancel the order and that can take weeks.

So in summary, if you are with Freeserve/AOL be aware....this is just what I
have heard and as an ISP every migration request we have placed to Freeserve
gets rejected. I would be interested to hear what other ISP's get?

Regards

Alex

Well what do you expect with any company that is linked into the PC World,
Dixon's, Curry's empire. Their attitude to their customers frankly stinks.

Its also not surprising as freeserve are owned by Orange and we all know
what they are like.

You fuckwit. They are not. If you believe that France Telecom's
ownership of Orange and Wanandoo delegates as Freeserve being 'owned' by
Orange then you are a utter *utter* imbecile.

The one reason I'm looking to move from Freeserve is that they've recently
spotted they were undercharging customers, but whether their attitude does
or doesn't stink, in relation to migrations (and is it really so difficult
to arrange a switch while taking a holiday?) I found it refreshing that in
the letter about undercharging, they explained they would not be expecting
payment (about 80 pounds) as it was their mistake. So thanks, but goodbye
to Freeserve (when I get round to cancelling, perhaps not immediately

The only trouble with cease and reprovide is that once the cease order is in
effect, BT usually take about 5-10 days before turning off ADSL. This
prevents you from signing up with another provider until you return from
holiday, so you can't win really.

I guess lots of people scrapped their second line, as they felt no need
for it. I kept mine (actually, I was keeping my first, as I had used
that number for a number of years) and the Highway line for backup.
I'd have no problem with cease and re-provide, unless BT messed up!

Anyway, the UK ISP should be able to process an order, even if placed
"online" - unless they require some silly piece of paper to be signed,
I'd sign up from almost anywhere nowadays. It depends on the holidays
you wish to take, of course ...

I go to visit people and places, so some beach resort is far from 'ideal',
and most of the people I've visited have had their own 'net connection, so
I've only ever needed to seek out some library or internet cafe when I've
been visiting other cities. Certainly you may have to wait a while and
'book' time, but on my visits I've used PCs for free in libraries, even
though I'm not a 'local'. Peter M.
