Hi

I'm about to come out of my 12 month contract with wanadoo. Can anyone
reccomend an ISP which will supply me with a 1 or 2mbit connection with
a decent download allowance (~20gb / month)... I'd be using it for
gaming and also a bit of p2p so it's got to allow that.

Any reccomendations - either to go with or to avoid would be appreciated!

Thanks
ash

Certainly don't migrate to PlusNet if you're interested in P2P or Usenet
because the've started "Prioritizing" their connections and this means that
P2P and Usenet are throttled at busy times, i.e about 4 pm to midnight
Your usage levels would be OK, but P2P and Usenet is throttled no matter
what your usage & those nice people at PlusNet don't tell you that in their
adverts because they feel it might confuse you.

I've recently migrated from PlusNet to Zen and I'm very pleased that I did.
It's more money than PlusNet, but it is a full service that I can use at any
time without being throttled.

I'd highly recommend Demon.
No limits or restrictions.

Zen seem to have a good name for themselves.

Obviously avoid Plusnet

What about Homechoice or UKOnline? on paper they look good (and cheap) but
does anyone have any experience of them?

One word "Zen"

But you get what you pay for, they are not the cheapest.

Remember that the cheapest is NOT always the best value!!

Do a bit of research at www.adslguide.org.uk reading the forums there
for whichever ISP takes your fancy. Select up to 6 of them on their
ISP comparator page to get user views of their services aggregated for
(from memory) speed, cost and customer service.

The reviews section at www.ispreview.co.uk is similarly useful as it
allows you to read user written reviews of ISPs services together with
ratings.

That's what I did and I've decided on Metronet, Freedom2Surf or Zen
Internet all of which are reviewed very favourably and none of which
as far as I'm aware use port throttling, traffic shaping etc. If you
want the undoubted epitome of a quality service then go for Zen, but
they are expensive. For a high quality no frills (eg Email has to be
purchased separately, but if you went for it Email me for a Gmail
account - 2Gb storage) service look at Metronet. F2S offers good
quality services up to 8Mbs depending on your exchange together with
unmetered downloads between 1-00am an 6-00am.

All of them offer one month contracts and migration if you're not
happy.

I'd suggest avoiding any ISP that ties you to a 12 month contract and
in particular AVOID TISCALI like the plague. I made that mistake some
time ago and am just waiting for them to finally introduce migration
(allegedly later this month). Plusnet also seem to be getting "pasted"
recently.

Best of luck

Regards

Mike K

If you really want to EMail me then use: stardancer69 at tiscali dot co dot uk

Give tiscali a go, they are one of the few providers still allowing
unlimited download. #15 for 1 meg.

Very true. You've written ne of the best sales promos they could get for
those who could care less about peer-to-peer file sharing, but want fast
web access at a low price, and a few extras thrown in.

>It's more money than PlusNet,

Some might say a lot more money... I'm on the 14.99 Broadband Plus, which
yes, is *traffic calmed* a lot, if not all the time (and I wish they'd 'up'
the speed overnight, TBH) but in the last 2 weeks my traffic hit ~34 GB on
sreaming audio and video services. Peter M.

UK ADSL <http://tinyurl.com/dghgq> - Happy to save cash with Plus.Net!

Unsuitable for heavy downloaders, but fine for video/audio streaming.

I was thinking it might come down to tiscali.. (ducks!) Yes, i know they
are getting terrible write-ups at the moment, but wanadoo have a bad
time from it now and then but i've always been impressed with their
service. If they'd get a little more competitive with their pricing and
capping then i'd be staying with them. But if they want to charge me (a
customer since they very first started as freeseve) twenty quid just to
upgrade from 1mbit to 2mbit, then i'm obviously going to look elsewhere
now my 12month b/b contract's up.

I guess like us all we want a connection as fast as possible with
unlimited usage at a cheap price. Just noticed that Demon are doing
2mbit unlimited for 19.99/month... any comments??

cheers
