Hey there Henry, I have a few questions for you.
Is your DNS set as Active Directory Integrated? If you have your file server
part of the AD domian, do you have the full name of the machine listed in the
properties of the server? Also, do you have WINS running on any server in
your network?
Here is what I would check on that 2003 server. First, right-click on the My
Computer icon and go to properties. Under the Computer Name tab, look at the
full computer name and Domain listed. Is the computer listed as
<servername>.domain.com or just <servername>? If it is just the servername,
click on Change --> More. Add the domain extension associated with your AD.
Next, right click on the network connection and choose properties. Click on
the TCP/IP properties. On the first page make sure your DNS server is listed
FIRST. Click Advanced then the DNS tab. Add the AD domain listed in the DNS
suffix for this connection: box, and make sure that the Register this
connections addresses in DNS box is checked. Next, go to the WINS tab and add
your WINS server (if you have one.)
OK yourself out (it will ask for a restart, do it if you can.)
Go to a command prompt (start --> run --> cmd.exe) and type nbtstat -RR
(enter) nbtstat -R (enter) and ipconfig /dnsflush to clear the WINS and DNS
caches (not needed if you just restarted.)
If the server is communicating with the DNS zones, you should be able to see
the entire network from the My Network Places icon.
You should also check your DNS zones to make sure that dynamic updates are
allowed. They should be when you created your DNS zones, but I would check to
make sure.
Please let me know if that helps.
